Kratom Strains Chart: Effects, Colors & Dosage Compared
So you keep seeing strain names like Red Bali, White Maeng Da and Green Hulu Kapuas, and none of it tells you what any of them actually do? You are not alone. Kratom naming is a mess of vein colors, island names, and vendor marketing stacked on top of each other. The good news is that the system underneath it is genuinely simple once someone lays it out for you.
We have been sampling and comparing strains for years, so we built the chart below to be the thing we wish we had when we started. Let’s jump in!

The Complete Kratom Strains Chart
Here is every major strain in one place, with its vein color, dominant effect, typical onset, and how long it tends to last. Use it as a shortlist, then read the strain notes further down for the detail.
| Strain | Vein | Primary Effect | Speed | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red Maeng Da | Red | Strong pain relief with mood lift | Moderate | 5 to 6 hrs |
| White Maeng Da | White | Clean energy and focus | Fast | 4 to 5 hrs |
| Green Maeng Da | Green | Balanced energy and comfort | Moderate | 5 hrs |
| Red Bali | Red | Relaxation and analgesia | Slow | 5 to 6 hrs |
| Gold Bali | Gold | Smooth, mellow, less sedating than red | Slow | 5 hrs |
| Red Borneo | Red | Body relaxation, evening use | Slow | 5 to 6 hrs |
| Green Borneo | Green | Mental clarity without jitter | Moderate | 4 to 5 hrs |
| White Borneo | White | Motivation and mental clarity | Fast | 4 hrs |
| Green Malay | Green | Long-lasting balance of both | Moderate | 6 to 8 hrs |
| Red Thai | Red | Euphoric with pain relief | Moderate | 5 hrs |
| White Thai | White | Strong stimulation, sociability | Fast | 4 hrs |
| Red Indo | Red | Gentle relaxation, low wobble risk | Slow | 5 hrs |
| Super Indo | Mixed | Stronger Indo, wider effect range | Moderate | 5 hrs |
| Hulu Kapuas | All three | Energizing with mental clarity | Fast | 4 to 5 hrs |
| Bentuangie | Red (fermented) | Heavy relaxation, sleep support | Slow | 6 hrs |
| Red Malay | Red | Slow onset, very long duration | Slow | 6 to 8 hrs |
| Red Sumatra | Red | Calm without heavy sedation | Slow | 6 hrs |
| Red Sulawesi | Red | Muscle relaxation, milder profile | Slow | 5 hrs |
| Horned (Horn) | Red or Green | Rare leaf shape, well-rounded effect | Moderate | 5 hrs |
| Trainwreck | Blend | Multi-strain blend, broad effect | Moderate | 5 to 6 hrs |
One honest caveat before you treat that table as gospel. Two bags labelled Red Bali from two different vendors can feel noticeably different, because harvest timing, drying method and leaf age all move the alkaloid content around. The chart tells you what to expect. Your batch decides how strongly you get it.

Kratom Color Chart: What Red, Green, White and Gold Mean
Vein color is the single most useful thing on a kratom label. It refers to the color of the stem and vein running through the leaf at harvest, and it tracks closely with how the finished powder behaves.
- Red vein. Harvested from the most mature leaves. Highest in the alkaloids associated with comfort and calm. This is the relaxation and pain end of the spectrum, and it is where most people looking for evening relief end up.
- White vein. Harvested young, before the vein darkens. Sits at the stimulating end. Think morning coffee replacement rather than sedative.
- Green vein. Harvested in between, and it behaves that way. Mild energy with a comfort floor underneath it. Greens are the most forgiving place to start.
- Gold and yellow. Not a separate harvest. These are usually red or green leaves put through an extended drying or fermenting process, which softens the sedation and rounds the edges off.

The biggest myth we run into is that gold strains are a distinct plant variety. They are not. If a vendor is selling Gold Bali at triple the price of Red Bali and cannot explain what they did to the leaf, that price gap is marketing rather than botany.
Fast, Moderate and Slow Kratom Strains
Longtime users often skip vein color entirely and sort strains by speed instead. It is a more practical system once you know what you want out of a dose, and it maps neatly onto the time of day you plan to take it.
| Speed | What it feels like | Typical strains | Best time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fast | Alert, talkative, motivated | White Maeng Da, White Thai, White Borneo, Hulu Kapuas | Morning |
| Moderate | Steady, level, neither wired nor sleepy | Green Malay, Green Borneo, Green Maeng Da, Horned | Midday |
| Slow | Heavy, warm, physically relaxed | Red Bali, Red Borneo, Bentuangie, Red Malay, Red Indo | Evening |
Speed is not the same as onset time. A slow strain like Red Bali can still come on within 25 minutes. The label describes the character of the effect, not how long you wait for it.
Most Potent Kratom Strains, Ranked
Potency comes down to alkaloid content, and alkaloid content is driven by leaf maturity and growing conditions far more than by the name on the bag. That said, some strains consistently test and feel stronger across vendors.
- Maeng Da (any color). The name translates loosely as “pimp grade,” and it was coined for selectively bred stock with unusually high alkaloid content. It earns the top spot.
- Bentuangie. The fermentation concentrates the sedating side considerably. Small doses go a long way.
- Green Malay. Not the most intense at onset, but the longest lasting by a wide margin. Duration is its own kind of strength.
- Red Borneo. Reliably strong for physical comfort without much stimulation to fight against.
- Super Indo. The “super” grade is genuinely selected for larger, more mature leaves rather than being pure marketing.

Here is a practical potency tip that has nothing to do with strain names. Dull, brownish, coarse powder has usually been sitting too long or was dried badly. Bright green and finely ground is what a fresh batch looks like, and freshness affects how a dose feels more than most people expect. Kratom Dosage Chart
Dosage matters more than strain selection, and it catches almost everyone out at the start. The same powder can be stimulating at 2 grams and sedating at 6 grams, which means a “wrong” strain is often just a wrong dose.
| Dose Level | Grams | Teaspoons | Expected Effects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mild | 1–2g | 0.5–0.9 tsp | Gentle mood lift, mild energy, alert |
| Moderate | 2–4g | 1–2 tsp | Full effects, comfort begins, noticeable mood change |
| High | 4–8g | 2–4 tsp | Strong sedation or strong analgesia, for experienced users |
| Very High ⚠ | 8g+ | 4+ tsp | High risk of nausea, dizziness, “the wobbles” — not recommended |
Start low, go slow. Kratom’s effects vary by body weight, tolerance, and whether you’ve eaten recently. New to a strain? Start at 1–2g and wait 45 minutes before deciding if you need more. The “sweet spot” usually takes 2-3 tries to find, and that’s completely normal.

Two adjustments worth knowing. Reds generally need slightly less than whites to reach the same subjective intensity, so if you are moving from a white to a red, drop half a gram. And capsules typically hold 0.5g each, which means a moderate 3g dose is six capsules. That adds up faster than people budget for.
Strain-by-Strain Notes

Maeng Da. The most requested strain we get asked about, and the most misunderstood. It is not a region, it is a grade. Red is the pain and mood option, white is the energy option, and green splits the difference. If someone recommends “Maeng Da” without specifying a color, they have not told you much.
Bali. The workhorse red. Widely available, consistently priced, and reliably relaxing. It carries a slightly higher wobble risk at high doses than other reds, so respect the 4g mark. Our full Red Bali guide covers it properly.
Borneo. Available in all three colors and each is distinct. Red Borneo is the classic evening strain, White Borneo is genuinely motivating rather than jittery, and Green Borneo is one of the better options for daytime focus without an edge.
Green Malay. The duration champion. Six to eight hours is common, which makes it efficient if you would otherwise redose. Onset is gradual enough that impatient users often take more too early. Give it a full hour.
Thai. Red Thai leans euphoric more than most reds. White Thai is one of the strongest stimulants available and is not the place to start if caffeine already makes you anxious.
Indo and Super Indo. Gentle, forgiving, low on the wobble scale. Red Indo is a good first red for anyone who found Bali too heavy.
Hulu Kapuas. Grown along the Kapuas river in a fairly small area, so supply comes and goes. Users describe it as energizing with unusual mental clarity, which is why it has a following out of proportion to its availability. We wrote up White Hulu Kratom and its effects separately.
Bentuangie. Fermented red, sometimes sold as “chocolate” kratom for its darker color. The heaviest relaxation on this list. Start at 1.5g even if you are experienced with other reds.
Sumatra, Sulawesi and Riau. Regional reds with milder, smoother profiles. Worth trying if the mainstream reds feel too sedating but you still want the comfort.
Horned kratom. Named for the spiked edges on the leaf rather than any region. The trees are less common, so it costs more and shows up less often. Most people describe it as unusually well-rounded, hitting comfort and mood at the same time without pushing hard in either direction. Available as red or green.
Trainwreck. Not a strain at all. It’s a blend, usually of eight to eleven different strains mixed together, and the recipe changes from vendor to vendor. That makes it genuinely unpredictable across suppliers. Some blends lean stimulating, others lean sedating, and there is no way to know from the name alone. We’d treat any new Trainwreck as an unfamiliar strain and start at 1.5g regardless of your usual dose.
Blends in general are worth a word of caution. A blend can be an honest attempt at a balanced product, or it can be a way to move slow-selling stock. If a vendor lists what went into the mix, that’s a good sign. If the label just says “proprietary,” you’re buying on trust alone.
How to Pick the Right Strain for You
Work backwards from what you actually want, not from what sounds impressive on a label.
- Pain or physical discomfort. Red Bali, Red Borneo, Red Maeng Da. Start at 2g.
- Energy and focus. White Maeng Da, White Thai, White Borneo. Start at 1.5g, these are strong.
- Anxiety or low mood. Green Malay, Green Borneo, Red Thai. Greens are the safer entry point.
- Sleep. Bentuangie or Red Bali, taken about an hour before bed.
- Complete beginner. A green vein at 1.5g. Greens are the hardest to get wrong.
Rotating strains matters more than picking a perfect one. Using the same strain daily builds tolerance to it specifically, and most people who feel kratom “stopped working” have simply worn out one profile. Alternating between two or three across the color spectrum keeps effects noticeable at a lower dose.
Vendor choice matters just as much. Alkaloid content varies enough between suppliers that the same strain name is not a guarantee of the same experience, which is why we maintain our list of the best kratom vendors and check it against current lab testing and American Kratom Association GMP participation.
Where We Buy Our Comparison Strains
Kats Botanicals is our default recommendation for strain sampling because they publish batch lab results and sell in 1oz sizes, so testing three strains does not mean buying three kilos.

Kratom Strains FAQ
What is the best kratom strain?
There isn’t one, and anybody who gives you a single answer is guessing. It depends entirely on what you want. Reds for comfort and rest, whites for energy, greens for balance. If you are starting from zero, a green vein at 1.5g is the least likely to disappoint.
What is the difference between kratom colors?
Vein color reflects leaf maturity at harvest. Red veins come from the most mature leaves and lean relaxing. Whites are harvested young and lean stimulating. Greens land in between. Gold and yellow are reds or greens that went through extra drying or fermentation.
Which kratom strain is the strongest?
Maeng Da in any color is generally the most potent by alkaloid content, with Bentuangie close behind for sedation specifically. That said, a fresh batch of an ordinary strain will usually outperform a stale bag of a premium one.
How much kratom should I take?
Start at 1 to 2 grams, which is roughly half a teaspoon, and wait a full 45 minutes. Most people settle between 2 and 4 grams. Going past 8 grams raises the odds of nausea and dizziness without adding much benefit.
What are fast, moderate and slow kratom strains?
It’s a community shorthand for the character of the effect rather than how quickly it arrives. Fast strains feel alert and motivating, slow strains feel heavy and relaxing, and moderate strains sit level between the two. Whites are usually fast, reds usually slow.
How long do kratom effects last?
Four to six hours for most strains. Green Malay and Red Malay run longer at six to eight hours. Onset is typically 20 to 40 minutes, and taking it on an empty stomach speeds that up noticeably.
Is kratom an opiate?
No. Kratom is a tropical botanical in the coffee family, and its alkaloids are structurally unrelated to opiates. It also does not show up on a standard 5-panel drug test.
Should I rotate kratom strains?
Yes, and it’s the single easiest way to keep your dose low. Tolerance builds to a specific strain profile faster than it builds to kratom overall. Alternating two or three strains across different vein colors keeps effects noticeable without escalating the amount.
